Sebi vs scam: Market regulator launches campaign to tackle financial frauds

Published:

In a bid to tackle the growing wave of digital financial frauds targeting retail investors, markets regulator Sebi and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) have jointly launched a nationwide investor awareness initiative titled #SEBIvsSCAM.

The campaign seeks to arm investors with critical knowledge to protect themselves from a range of deceptive practices—from fake trading apps and deepfake advisory videos to unregistered investment tips circulating on social media platforms. Scams such as “guaranteed returns,” pump-and-dump schemes, dabba trading, and fraudulent foreign portfolio offers have been luring unsuspecting investors and eroding trust in the capital markets.

The #SEBIvsSCAM initiative will deploy a comprehensive multimedia strategy that includes television, radio, digital platforms, and social media to disseminate vital safety information.

Investor Awareness Programs will also be conducted in physical, digital, and hybrid formats to ensure outreach in urban as well as rural areas, with content available in multiple languages to cater to India’s diverse investor base.

According to a release, the campaign will spotlight common red flags and help investors make informed decisions by verifying trading platforms and advisors via SEBI and NSE’s official portals.

NSE urges investors to engage only with Sebi-registered intermediaries and avoid unverified chat groups or third-party apps.Funds should be transferred only to registered client bank accounts of stockbrokers, whose details can be verified on NSE’s official website. Victims of fraud are encouraged to report incidents at cybercrime.gov.in or dial the national cybercrime helpline at 1930.As Sebi strengthens its regulatory guardrails, this campaign underscores a broader shift toward empowering investors through education, transparency, and digital vigilance—key to safeguarding India’s retail investor community in an increasingly complex financial landscape.
